Flying Hippo Review

The flying pink elephant is a classic hangover trope of the more severe kind, but we have to say that the pinkish flying hippo in this release is even more nauseating. It’s an image we cannot unsee, unfortunately, and Flying Hippo is below par for Pragmatic Play to say the least. This is supposedly a LeoVegas exclusive, and we sure hope they didn’t pay out the nose for what’s on offer here. Perhaps it will be used in some kind of campaign, but we really don’t know.

It kind of feels like you died and went to hippo heaven instead where you’d supposedly belong, and the top-tier 93.99 % RTP seals the deal as a contender for the worst release of 2023. Wilds spawn per tumble win, and winning wilds are collected to upgrade the spawning wild multiplier. Get to multiplier level 3, and you will also get 2 colossal wilds with random multipliers at the end of the sequence. The 5,000x potential is decent, but this is hardly the Pragmatic Play we’re used to.

Flying Hippo Slot Features

You win by landing clusters of 5 to 25+ matching symbols anywhere on the 7x7 grid, and these connect vertically or horizontally.

The symbols pay between 5 and 50 x your stake for 25+ in a cluster, and between 0.1 and 0.75 x your stake for the minimum of 5 to 6 in a cluster. The smiley cloud Wild symbol steps in for pay symbols to help complete wins, and it can appear anywhere both organically and via the tumble mechanic we’ll describe below.

The Tumble mechanic removes all winning symbols from the grid, and the gaps are filled by new and/or existing symbols dropping down from above. A Wild symbol will always spawn in one of the empty positions before the rest of the symbols drop, and the wild generating tumbles continue as long as you keep winning. The wild holds no value of its own, just to be clear.

The tumble spawning Wild Feature comes with some extras as well, as the level of the current spin determines whether or not a multiplier wild is spawned. The multiplier will boost all future wins the wild takes part in, and winning wilds are collected in a meter.

You need to collect 6 wilds to level up, and there are 3 levels above the default level zero. Here is an overview of how it works:

  • Level 0 - wilds spawn without a multiplier (or sometimes an x2 multiplier).
  • Level 1 - wilds spawn with a multiplier of x2 or x3.
  • Level 2 - wilds spawn with a multiplier of x3, x4, x5, or x6.
  • Level 3 - wilds spawn with a multiplier of x3, x4, x5, or x6.

The wild collection feature stops after you’ve achieved level 3, and at the end of the tumble sequence you get 2 colossal 2x2-sized Wilds in random positions. These come with random multipliers of x3, x5, x7, x10, x15, x25, or x50 attached, and the colossal wilds will absorb any regular wild multipliers from wilds they overlap. Multipliers are added together if more than one wild is part of the same win, and the meter resets to level zero on the next spin.

Review Summary

It’s hard to tell what LeoVegas plans to do with this game, and it’s equally hard to imagine that it came from the hand of such an experienced developer as Pragmatic Play. Flying Hippo comes across as half-baked, and perhaps they gave the accounting department the final say in both design, features, and math model. Who in their right mind would want to play a below mediocre game with an RTP of 93.99 %. At least make it 94.01 % so it looks a bit better, but returns like this alone is a dealbreaker for pretty much anyone.

We have heard of flying pink elephants before, and the pinkish hippo seems like an idea spawned from a delirium-fuelled hangover after an afterparty that went nowhere. The pace is a bit sluggish with no turbo option, and the gameplay is neither charming nor engaging.

Flying Hippo Slot Gameplay 2068

This is one of the strangest releases we’ve seen in a while, which is saying something in this business, and perhaps it can achieve some kind of cult turkey status. Either way, we cannot recommend this game to anyone, except as an example of how to not do things.

Pros

  • Tumble Wins spawn wilds
  • Winning wilds are collected to level up
  • 3 levels of wild multipliers up to x6
  • Win up to 5,000x your stake

Cons

  • Top-tier RTP of 93.99 % is a dealbreaker
  • Beware of adjustable RTP ranges
