Book of Toro is a medium to high volatility 'book of' mechanic slot from ELK Studios, and it plays out on 5x3 reels with 10 paylines. You get both Mummy Respins and Toro Walking Wild Respins, and when the Toro sees a mummy the Toro Goes Wild feature is triggered. The bonus round can be retriggered to get up to 3 special expanding symbols, and this can lead to payouts up to 10,000x your stake. Check our full review below, and test the free demo game.

Book of Toro Review

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of their original smash hit, Wild Toro, ELK is releasing 3 follow-up titles in a relatively short timespan. The very solid Wild Toro 2 was their first release in this regard, and Book of Toro is the second. Pairing the Wild Toro feature with ‘Book-style’ mechanics is a somewhat daring experiment, but ELK has managed to pull it off beyond all expectations.

The base game comes with plenty of action compared to most other Book slots out there, and the Toro Goes Wild whenever it appears together with at least one Mummy on the reels. While ‘book of’ purists might not be pleased, we find it refreshing to have a ‘Book slot’ that doesn’t take itself oh so seriously. The 10,000x potential is no joke however, and the biggest drawback is the below average 95 % RTP that ELK, for some reason, keeps insisting on.

Book of Toro Slot Features

The premium symbols are worth less than in most other book slots, and 5 of a kind pays between 20 and 250 x your stake. There are 3 kinds of wilds in this game, and they all step in for regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos. A payline of only wilds pay the same as the top-tier Explorer symbol.

The Toro Wild Respins feature is triggered when the bull symbol lands on reels 5 (it cannot appear anywhere else).

The Toro Wild will then move one step to the left per respin until he moves off the grid. If a Mummy symbol lands, the Toro moves towards it to knock it off the grid. He leaves a trail of wilds behind when he ‘goes wild’, and all Book scatter/wilds are sticky during the feature.

Landing at least 2 Mummy symbols anywhere in view triggers the Mummy Respins feature. The triggering symbols become sticky, and the same happens to any new Mummy symbols that land on the respin that follows. If the Toro Wild lands you trigger the Toro Goes Wild feature, as described above.

You trigger the Bonus Round when you land 3, 4 or 5 Book scatters anywhere in view, and this awards 10, 15 or 20 free spins, respectively.

A regular pay symbol is then chosen to be the special expanding symbol, and the expanding symbol does not need to land adjacent to win. If you land enough instances of it on different reels, it expands to cover each reel and pays accordingly after the regular win calculation.

You can retrigger the bonus round by landing 3+ scatters on a free spin, and this awards an additional special expanding symbol. You can have up to 3 expanding symbols at the same time this way, and the Toro Wild can step in for expanding symbols during the feature. You can also trigger the Mummy Respins and Toro Walking Wild feature within the bonus round.

Per usual with ELK, non-UK players can take advantage of the X-iter Bonus Buy Menu. It comes with 5 options this time, and these are as follows:

  • Mummy Respins (cost 5x your stake) - awards a guaranteed Mummy Respin trigger.
  • Toro (cost 25x your stake) - guarantees the Toro Walking Wild Respins feature to trigger.
  • Mini Bonus (50x your stake) - awards 3 spins with a randomly chosen expanding symbol.
  • Bonus (100x your stake) - triggers the regular bonus round with at least 3 scatters.
  • Super Bonus (500x your stake) - triggers an enhanced bonus round, where both book symbols and expanding symbols are sticky. The latter is only sticky as long as a new expanding symbol lands, or until all 5 reels are covered by expanding symbols.

The 200 Spins Book of Toro Slot Experience

We have a lengthy highlights video for you this time, and this is because the Super Bonus Round was retriggered and we got plenty of respins features within it. The feature starts at 0:50 into the 11-minute video, and you can see for yourself how we fared by hitting the play button below.

Review Summary

We’re highly impressed by how ELK has managed to balance everything out in this jam-packed ‘Toro goes Book’ release. Talk about bursting onto the Book scene with a bang, and Book of Toro is bound to make waves in both the Book and Toro camp.

Book of Toro Slot Review 421

Fans of both game styles will find plenty to enjoy here, but Book slot purists might not like all the extra features. We don’t mind it at all however, and we see this as one of the most interesting Ra clones ever released.

It’s a bit sad that the Super Bonus Round cannot be triggered organically, as it can get really wild when things go your way. Still, the regular bonus round comes with up to 3 expanding symbols, and it’s often prolonged due to Toro and Mummy Respins. The 10,000x potential is double of what this genre is used to, but the below-average 95 % RTP is a bit of a downer when everything else is top notch.

Pros

  • Toro Walking Wild Respins
  • Mummy Respins and Toro Goes Wild
  • FS w/ up to 3 expanding symbols
  • X-iter Bonus Buy Menu (not UK)
  • Win up to 10,000x your stake

Cons

  • The 95 % RTP is a turd in the punch bowl
  • Single spin max win is “only” 2,500x

Wild Toro 2 - is the highly anticipated follow-up to ELK’s smash hit original, and it comes with a 5x5 grid that can expand up to 5x8. This is done via the Matador Walking Wild Respins, and the Toro Wild can, of course, go berzerk as usual. The max win is a solid 10,000x also here.

Wild Toro - is the original mega hit from ELK, and it’s still wildly popular to this day.

It’s all about the matador walking wild respins, and the Toro goes berzerk if he lands at the same time. The RTP is above average in this release, and you can win up to 2,250x your stake.

Gonzo's Gold - is an unusual installment inspired by the ‘book slot’ genre, and this NetEnt release plays out on a 5x5 cluster pays grid. The chosen expanding symbol can fill both rows and reels in the bonus round, and this can lead to payouts up to 6,500x your stake.
