⚔️ There is no doubt that Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear sticks out from the rest of the series. It does not really do this because of visually stunning design or animations, but rather because the visuals look like a 90s computer game.

Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear Review

Playtech Origins has decided to stray pretty far from the regular Kingdoms Rise formula with Chasm of Fear, not least when it comes to the visual impression. The graphics of this game has a strong 90s computer game vibe, and we assume this is intentional and not reflective of the level of skill of the design team. You’ll see the pirate ship sail into the chasm in the intro screen, but it looks more idyllic than anything else at this point.

The game itself plays out on the wind-filled sail of the ship, where 5 reels spin with 4 rows and 1,024 ways to win. The ship is constantly in motion as you travel deeper into the ravine, and you might get some rather claustrophobic and weird vibes if you’ve ever seen Burt Reynolds save Jon Voight in the 1972 thriller-classic Deliverance. That movie starts out as an idyllic canoe trip down a river, but just like in the game at hand, things take a nasty turn real soon.

As usual with this series, you can win 3 different progressive jackpots randomly, and the big one starts at £100,000. The sea might be calm enough in this game, but the ride will be highly volatile nonetheless. It helps that wins up to 10,000x your stake is possible though, and this will most likely happen in the Respins or Free Spins feature. An extra topsail is then raised above the regular sail reels, and this adds 2 extra rows on the 3 middle reels. It also increases the number of paylines to 3,456, and gives you extra speed to move away from the danger the lurks from above.

What are the bonus features?

Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear comes with a full deck of features really, and there are plenty of things to cover here. We’ll start with the simplest ones first, and save the most exciting stuff for last.

The wild symbol is a half-open treasure chest, and it will only land on reels 2, 3 and 4. It can appear as a regular wild that steps in for all regular symbols, or it can land with a 2x or 3x multiplier value attached.

Respin feature

The giant orc-looking creature is the scatter symbol in this game, and this symbol will only land on reel 5. When you land a scatter on the second row on reel 5, you trigger the Respins feature.

The reels will now expand to a 4-6-6-6-4 rows setup instead of the regular 4 rows, and this increases your winning ways from 1,024 to 3,456 paylines.

Kingdoms Rise Shop

Like the other Kingdoms Rise games out there, you will also find an in-game shop in Chasm of Fear. You will collect tokens as you play the game, and you can use these to buy enhanced bonus features or even bonus features from other games in the series.

You can, for example, buy a Wild Respins feature, which is a beefed up version of the regular respins feature in this game. As the name indicates, it comes with wilds, and here is what you can get for your tokens:

  • 300 tokens gives you 1 respin with a wild in the topsail of reel 2 or 3
  • 500 tokens gives you 1 respin with 2 wilds in the topsail of reels 2 and 3
  • 750 tokens gives you 1 respin with 2 wilds in the topsail of reels 2 and 4
  • 1,000 tokens gives you 1 respin with 3 wilds in the topsail of reels 2, 3 and 4

Kingdoms Rise Jackpot feature

All Kingdoms Rise games are part of the same jackpot network, and the jackpot feature might strike at any given moment when you play. This adds a bit of extra excitement to your spins, and your chances of triggering the jackpot feature will increase a bit with the size of your bet level. Here are the 3 jackpots you can win in Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear slot:

  • Epic Jackpot - a progressive jackpot with no upper limit that seeds at £100,000
  • Power Strike - will always be won before it hits a given amount
  • Daily Strike - will be won within a given time each day

Free spins in Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear

You trigger the free spins bonus round almost the same way you triggered the respins feature. You will now have to land the giant orc scatter on row 3 or 5 on the 5th reel though, and this gives you 6 free spins for starters.

The reel set will again expand with the topsail that gives you 2 extra rows on reels 2, 3 and 4, and you are playing each spin with the maximum of 3,456 ways to win. You can get extra spins during the bonus round, and this is done by landing the giant orc scatter on reel 5 once again.

Landing the scatter on row 3 gives you 3 extra spins, while landing it on row 4 gives you 6 extra spins. There is no upper limit as to how many extra free spins you can get this way, and respins are also possible to trigger during the feature by landing the scatter on the second row.

How to play

The game interface has been adjusted to suit the theme, and it comes with wooden buttons to match the sail ship you’re literally travelling on.

This is the part of the review where we tell you all you need to know to play Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear slot, and this will get you ready to set sail in no-time.

You can start by clicking the info button, as this opens up the game’s paytable for you. Here you can check out the symbol values on the 2 first slides. There are 6 premium symbols here, including a dragon as the highest payer of the bunch. A mermaid and monkey is also of decent value here, and the 3 pirate heroes are the lowest value symbols of the premiums

These 6 symbols pay from 20x to 50x for 5 on payline, while the 5 lower value gemstone symbols pay 20x for 5 on a payline. You need only 2 of the serpent/dragon symbol and the mermaid symbol from the uttermost left to right to win, while the rest of the symbols require at least 3 of a kind. The rest of the slides in the info section are all about the different features.

The plus and minus symbols next to the info button allows you to adjust your bet level between 10p and £500 per spin.

This is a very solid bet range that should suit most every kind of player out there. Turbo mode can be switched on via the turbo button, and this increases the pace of the game for you.

Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear

If the motion of the ship relative to the background makes you a bit seasick, you can actually stop this animation via a small button on the right-hand side of the reels. Further, you can set up the autoplay feature with 5 to 100 autospins, or let it run indefinitely until you trigger a bonus feature. The spin button is pretty self-explanatory we presume, and it’s blinking green to encourage you to get going.

Where to play Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear?

The Kingdoms Rise series is quite popular, so we would not be surprised if even more operators take this into their fold in the near future. Either way, you get the best overview of where to play right here. We will explain how and why below.

Play for real money

Sometimes you just know if a game will be right for you when you read about it, just like you know a movie will be good as you watch the trailer.

There are some unusual elements in this game, like how you trigger the features for example. Also the way you travel through the narrow passage with the ship is different from most games, and this might be a good reason to try the free demo version first. Not that you need any reason at all to do that, and we know many players who always do this, if possible. Whatever you prefer, we have the Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear demo game installed at the very top of this page. Follow the link up there to get started immediately.

The 200 Spins Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear Experience

In the animated intro screen you see the ship sail into the narrow chasm, but we didn’t get what all the fear was about until we triggered the bonus round. In the video below you can see all the highlights from our 200 spins session, and you can also read all about how it went here.

We expected nothing less than plenty of dead spins and smaller wins from this game, and this is exactly what we got initially. You will only see a few of these rather uneventful spins in the video, but it’s good for you to know that this is the case. The game is highly volatile, but we fearlessly ventured into the unknown waters with a bet level of €1.5 per spin.

Our first big win came when we landed 3 wilds, one on each of the middle reels. The middle scatter came with a 2x multiplier, and we won a total of €21 from it. Not exactly enough to recuperate our losses, but it was still the best we got so far on our presumably dangerous sea voyage.

What followed this sudden stroke of luck was a series of dead spins and minute wins again, before we finally triggered the bonus round. The last reel teased us with a special effect, and either we would get a respin or the free spins feature. We got the latter luckily, and this gave us 6 spins to start with.

We finally understood what the “chasm of fear” was all about, as the bonus round intro shows a cartoon style animation of the giant from the scatter symbol actually hurling a huge boulder towards the ship below. The extra topsail was raised, and the speed of the sailboat was increased accordingly as we tried to escape the wrath of the orc giant.

The orc keeps throwing rocks all the way, but this does not really have any effect on the gameplay, which is a bit lame. We landed a decent €9.9 win on the first spin, but won only moderate sums the rest of the feature. We came out alive and well on the other end though, but only with a measly total win of €17.40 to show for it.

Review Summary

There is no doubt that Kingdoms Rise Chasm of Fear sticks out from the rest of the series. It does not really do this because of visually stunning design or animations, but rather because the visuals look like a 90s computer game. The bulging sail reels and the moving ship is not something you see too often either, but there is probably a reason you can turn it off if you want.

The features feel kind of half-baked to be honest, and the bonus round where you might land a few more wilds than usual is not really all that exciting. The rock throwing giant does not affect the game in any way, which renders the whole thing kind of pointless. At least let the rocks hit the reels/sail and wreak some havoc, or turn symbols wild or something. The jackpot adds a bit of extra excitement of course, and the 10,000x potential is solid even for a highly volatile game.

Pros

  • Respins and Free Spins with expanded reel set
  • In-game feature shop and token collection
  • 3 different progressive jackpots
  • High volatility and 10,000x max win potential

Cons

  • Looks a bit dated and haphazardly put together

If you enjoy games with pirate theme, we have 225 you can choose from in our catalog. There are 9 other games the Kingdoms Rise series you can check out at the time of writing, including a live blackjack version. We shall present you with 3 of the more noteworthy ones below.

Kingdoms Rise: Guardians of the Abyss - is less volatile than the game at hand, and the reels are set at the bottom of the sea. You can win up to 1,250x your stake, and this is most likely to occur in one of the 3 bonus rounds. Especially the multiplier version of the bonus round can give you some nice payouts.

Kingdoms Rise: Forbidden Forest - is something as unusual as a low volatility game with a massive 11,520x max win potential. This alone should make the game worthwhile checking out, and you will also benefit from up to £2,000 per spin stakes here. High rollers should be dripping from the mouth by now, and the main feature is free spins with roaming wilds.

Kingdoms Rise: Scorching Clouds - comes packed with somewhat unusual features, like inverted cascading wins respins and 2 different bonus rounds. This is a steampunk themed game that takes you on a journey through the clouds, and you will benefit from roaming wilds and the 3 Kingdoms Rise jackpots.
