The Last Sundown Review

The cyborg-looking siblings, Rae and Devin, take on the arch-villains, Tuco and Lauro, to postpone The Last Sundown, and the backstory is told with highly impressive animations and voice-overs. The game plays out in a Mad Max-inspired desert town silhouetted by the giant setting sun, and although this is a follow-up to Play’n Go’s own Shimmering Woods, both the theme and the core symbol splitting feature is clearly inspired by NoLimit City releases like xWays Hoarder xSplit.

Different characters, both good and bad, will sometimes manifest on the side of the grid, and, among other things, urge you to get a move on if you take a break. There is plenty of action commentary throughout also, and all the symbol splitting provides a dynamic payways base game. Upgrading more symbols to split is the core bonus round pursuit, and this is where you’re most likely to crack the 18,000x potential.

The Last Sundown Slot Features

The ‘W’ shaped Wild symbol steps in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combos, and it also pays 5x your stake for 5-oak wins. This is the same as the top-tier character symbol, and the premiums thus pay between 1.2 and 5 x your stake for 5 on a payline. Not a lot perhaps, but the split mechanic payways increase can make a huge impact.

Speaking of, the Splitting Symbols mechanic is central to the action in both the base game and during the bonus round. A symbol is randomly selected per base game spin, and all instances of it will split in two (if the symbol lands at all, which is not always the case).

The Last Sundown Slot Gameplay

This increases the number of win ways up to 7,776 at the most.

You need 3, 4 or 5 med-kit scatters anywhere in view to trigger the Bonus Round. This awards 8 free spins, plus a 5x, 10x or 50x scatter win up front, respectively. A splitting symbol is chosen up front for starters, and a random collector symbol is also chosen. The ladder is collected in the right-hand side meter whenever it lands, and a full meter makes this symbol an additional splitting symbol.

All symbols converted into splitting symbols remain so for the duration of the bonus round, and it’s possible to turn all symbols into splitting symbols. This includes wilds, and you need to collect 5 character premium symbols, 6 lower-value weapon symbols and 4 wilds to convert each symbol type, respectively.

Review Summary

While the obvious NoLimit City influence shines through, we give credit to Play’n Go for their highly compelling post-apocalyptic world-building. The characters, animations and action commentary is top notch stuff, and the overall audiovisual presentation is very solid. The gameplay itself is rather simple however, which can be a welcome break from the complexity you get in titles like xWays Hoarder xSplit or Nitropolis 2, which are somewhat related both in theme and featurewise.

The random splitting mechanic is similar to Shimmering Woods, but the themes are miles apart. The Cascading Wins with increasing multiplier feature is missing in this follow-up, and it would have made the base game more exciting for sure. Getting ever-more splitting symbols in the bonus round, including wilds, can be fun when things go your way. However, it’s not all that enjoyable when you hardly get anywhere on the meter. Overall, a solid effort that could perhaps have been developed even further in the feature department.

If you love The Last Sundown Slot you should also try:

Shimmering Woods - is the first Play’n Go release with the symbol splitting mechanic, and it comes with a far more peaceful theme. A splitting symbol is chosen randomly in the base game also here, but you also get a cascading wins multiplier. Up to all symbols can become splitting in the bonus round, and you can win up to 25,000x your stake.

xWays Hoarder xSplit - is a post-apocalyptic release from NoLimit City, but it’s done with a humorous streak that’s missing in the game at hand. The xSplit Wild combines well with the xWays symbol splitting, and xWays symbols merge in the 4-level bonus round. This can lead to payouts up to 11,030x your stake.

Nitropolis 2 - is set in a dystopian future where animals have taken over the show, and this ELK sequel comes with 12 Nitro Reels that can literally explode the number of win ways up to a staggering 191 million. You’ll also benefit from a Nitro Booster top reel that hands out 8 different modifiers, and this can lead to 10,000x your stake payouts in the sticky nitro reels free spins round.
