Howling Wolves Megaways Review
Coming very late to the party, Booming Games has finally obtained the popular Big Time Gaming licence, and Howling Wolves Megaways is their very first release in that regard. While some studios take this as an opportunity to truly shine and put in some extra effort, it’s not even business as usual here. At the very least, we expected a beefed up version of the original Howling Wolves, but instead this Megaways debut comes with less than half the potential.
Fair enough, the 96 % RTP has been boosted up to a respectable level, and you do get a bigger and bolder dynamic grid that maxes out at 6x7 reels with up to 117,649 win ways. However, the 4 random modifiers are similar to the first game, except for the added maxed out megaways feature for obvious reasons. The visual presentation is not too shabby perhaps, but everything else is overshadowed by the almost insultingly low 2,168x max win.
Howling Wolves Megaways Slot - Reels ScreenHowling Wolves Megaways Features
The high-value Major symbols consist of 4 wolves of different colors, and they pay between 4 and 15 x your stake for 6 of a kind wins. The full moon Wild can step in for all regular pay symbols to help complete winning combinations, but it holds no value of its own. All winning symbols are removed via the Cascading Wins mechanic, and new and/or existing symbols drop down to fill the gaps.
This process repeats as long as you keep winning.Similar Slots:
There are 4 modifiers that can trigger at any given time in all stages of the game, and these random modifiers are as follows:
- Howling Wilds - awards a random number of wilds across the grid.
- Alpha Pack Spin - turns all wolf symbols on the reels into the top-tier alpha wolf.
- Wolf Pack Multipliers - awards a starting win multiplier of x3, x4 or x5 to the current spin, and it increases by +1 per cascade.
- Max Megaways - guarantees 7 rows per reel, and thus a maxed out 117,649 win ways spin.
You need 4+ wolf gold coin scatters anywhere in view to trigger the Bonus Round, and this awards 8 free spins plus 2 extra spins on top of that for every extra triggering scatter above the minimum of 4. You can get 30 free spins at the most this way, and you can expect more frequent modifier triggers during the bonus round. Scatters cannot land during the feature however, which means retriggers or extra spins are out of the question.
The 200 Spins Howling Wolves Megaways Experience
We plowed through plenty of dead spins in the base game, before a barrage of 7 scatters suddenly appeared out of nowhere and gave us a solid 14 free spins. This happens around 1:30 into the 5:19-minute highlights video, and we got plenty of modifier action all the way. You can see for yourself how much we got away with by hitting the play button below.
Review Summary
We have to say that Booming Games’ Megaways debut is a real head-scratcher.
They’ve coughed up whatever fee BTG charges for the licence, only to release what amounts to one the most underwhelming installments so far in the whole Megaways genre. Not only is it a rehash of a less-than-successful original with pretty much the same features, but they’ve also, for some inconceivable reason, decided to slice the potential down to less than half of what the original offers.Even if everything else was top-notch, which is not the case, the wimpy 2,168x potential would still be a gigantic, glaring deal-breaker. On a positive note, the 96 % RTP has been increased a bit, and we do like the pace of the cascading wins. The 1 in 350 spins bonus round hit rate is way above the 200 spins average, and we doubt many players will bother even getting there with such low potential returns to look forward to. Overall, a very poor Megaways debut from a developer that seems to have long since settled for mediocrity, and you’re better off playing the original.
Pros
- Cascading Wins and up to 117,649 megaways
- 4 random modifiers in all stages of the game
- FS w/ more frequent modifier triggers
Cons
- Ridiculously low 2,168x max win potential
- Bonus round hit frequency of 1 in 350 spins
If you enjoy Howling Wolves Megaways you should also try:
Howling Wolves - is Booming Games’ original release, and it plays out on a 5x3 reel set with 25 betlines. You can expect more frequent base game wins, and it comes with 3 similar modifiers while the max megaways thing is obviously not available here. You can win up to 5,000x your stake in the bonus round, but the RTP of 95.49 % is below par.
Wolf Howl - is a volatile Just For The Win installment in the popular wolf genre, and it plays out on 5x3 reels with 10 betlines. You get multiplying multiplier wilds in the base game, and 2-4 scatters can be added at random times.
The bonus round comes with progressive multiplier wilds, and this can lead to solid payouts up to 25,000x your stake.Wolf Gold - is among the most popular slots out there, and not only in the wolf slot genre. This Pragmatic Play release plays out on 5x3 reels with 25 betlines, and the 3 middle reels merge into a giant symbol in the bonus round. You can also look forward to a money respins feature with up to 1,000x jackpots, and the overall max win is a decent 5,000x your stake.
